HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is a commodity, highly recyclable polymer. Customers ask about it mainly in the context of printing recycled flakes.
What the chats show
Section titled “What the chats show”- Direct interest in HDPE from recycled flakes: “we were asked about the possibility of using recycled flakes for printing” → HDPE.
- The dominant problem is warping: “the issue with HDPE is the warping.” HDPE has high crystallinity and shrinkage, so it lifts/distorts badly without careful thermal management.
Practical notes
Section titled “Practical notes”- Warping is the headline issue — see Warping. Expect to need a heated bed, brim, controlled cooling, and possibly an enclosure; large flat parts are the hardest.
- Adhesion: HDPE bonds poorly to most surfaces. As with PP, a like-material build surface tends to work best — see the PP approach in Bed surface.
- Recycled flakes vs pellets: flake feedstock is irregular and can challenge the feeding/vacuum path and flow consistency — see Recycled flakes and regrind and Hopper suction problems.
