Barrel clog purging procedure
How to manually clear a stubborn clog from the G1 extrusion barrel when the standard fix from Nozzle and barrel clog (lowering the feeding zone temperature) hasn’t worked.
When to do this
Section titled “When to do this”- A persistent clog blocks extrusion at any zone of the barrel
- Material change left a hardened residue inside
- The screw rotates but no material reaches the nozzle
- Manual extrude command at the right temperature gives nothing
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”- Tools: Allen keys (set), heat-resistant gloves, brass brush, clean cloth, optional purge compound (e.g. Slide / Dyna-Purge)
- Machine state: heated to print temperature; emergency stop accessible
- ** Safety**: heated barrel is hot; never put fingers near the nozzle or feed throat while powered
A. Heat soak
Section titled “A. Heat soak”- Set all three Multi-Heating Zones to the highest material’s recommended temperature
- Wait 10–15 minutes so the entire barrel reaches uniform temperature
- The plug needs to be fully soft to dislodge
B. Empty the hopper
Section titled “B. Empty the hopper”- Turn off the vacuum
- Remove all loose pellets from the hopper
- Set them aside in a sealed container (you’ll reload after)
C. Manual extrude — first attempt
Section titled “C. Manual extrude — first attempt”- From Mainsail / Fluidd, manually extrude at low rate (1–5 mm³/s)
- Watch the screw and the nozzle:
- Some material coming out → the plug is softening, continue purging at low rate for several minutes
- Nothing → proceed to step D
D. Top-down purge
Section titled “D. Top-down purge”If nothing flows, the plug is solid and you need to push fresh material through.
- Carefully drop a handful of fresh, clean pellets into the open feed throat (or use a purge compound)
- Run the extruder at low speed
- Material should start coming out the nozzle within a few minutes
- If it does → continue purging until the output is clean and consistent
- If still nothing → proceed to step E
E. Mechanical inspection (advanced)
Section titled “E. Mechanical inspection (advanced)”- Power down the printer
- Wait for the barrel to fully cool
- Remove the hopper and access the feed throat
- Visually inspect for solid plug
- Carefully remove debris with a brass tool (never steel — it scratches the screw and barrel)
- Reassemble, reheat, retry from step C
F. Recovery printing
Section titled “F. Recovery printing”Once material flows cleanly:
- Continue purging until output is uniform (color, no bubbles, no inclusions)
- Lower temperatures back to your normal print profile
- Reload the hopper with the intended material
- Run a small test print before resuming production
Final verification
Section titled “Final verification”- Manual extrude at low rate gives smooth, consistent flow
- No popping, no irregular bursts
- A test cube prints with normal first-layer behavior
- No dark or contaminated material in the output
- Most G1 clogs are soft plugs at the feeding zone — see Nozzle and barrel clog for the much faster fix (just lower the top zone)
- This full procedure is a last resort, not a routine
- Keep a small bag of purge compound on hand for production environments
- For purge compounds: Slide, Dyna-Purge, Asaclean — any commercial-grade screw cleaner works
