Lubricating linear rails

The G1 XY motion system runs on linear rails with ball-bearing carriages. Over time the lubricant inside the carriages dries out or is displaced by pellet dust, causing friction, grinding noises, and eventually Y-axis layer shifts. Regular lubrication is the single most effective preventive maintenance for the motion system.


The trigger is how the machine feels, not the calendar:

  • The hand-move test below fails — roughness, sticking, or a grinding sensation
  • Any grinding or metal-on-metal sound during XY moves
  • The machine has sat unused for months, so the lubricant has migrated away from the bearings

If none of that is happening, a pass every 3–6 months keeps it that way. Unlike replacing a part, lubricating early costs nothing, so the interval is a reminder rather than a rule.


With the machine off:

  1. Grasp the extruder carriage firmly
  2. Slide it slowly end-to-end along the Y rail, then the X rail
  3. Movement should feel smooth with only slight, even magnetic resistance from the motor
  4. Any roughness, sticking at specific points, or grinding sensation → lubrication needed
  5. A machine that is throwing Y-axis layer shifts with noise almost always fails this test — you can feel the friction by hand

  1. Power off the printer
  2. Move the extruder carriage to one end of the rail by hand
  3. Apply a few drops along the top of the rail, over its full length
  4. Slide the carriage slowly end-to-end 10–15 times so the oil is carried through the ball bearings inside the carriage
  5. Wipe the excess off with a lint-free cloth. What matters is the film inside the carriage, not oil sitting on the rail where pellet dust will stick to it
  6. Repeat for the other axis
  7. Re-run the hand-move test — movement should now feel smooth throughout

  • Run a short test print (5–10 layers) and listen for any remaining noise
  • If grinding persists after fresh lubrication, the bearing carriage may need replacement — contact Ginger Additive support
  • If a Y-axis layer shift was the symptom, also check belt tension (see Belt and pulley mechanical issues) and run a calibration print

  • Pellet printing generates more dust than filament printing — dust migrates into rail carriages over time
  • Running multiple shifts a day, check the feel more often — the dust load is what drives it, not elapsed time
