Lubricating linear rails
The G1 XY motion system runs on linear rails with ball-bearing carriages. Over time the lubricant inside the carriages dries out or is displaced by pellet dust, causing friction, grinding noises, and eventually Y-axis layer shifts. Regular lubrication is the single most effective preventive maintenance for the motion system.
When to lubricate
Section titled “When to lubricate”- Every 3–6 months during regular use
- Immediately if the hand-move test fails (see below)
- After any grinding or metal-on-metal sound during XY moves
- After the machine has sat unused for several months (lubricant migrates away from bearings)
Hand-move test — before lubricating
Section titled “Hand-move test — before lubricating”With the machine off:
- Grasp the extruder carriage firmly
- Slide it slowly end-to-end along the Y rail, then the X rail
- Movement should feel smooth with only slight, even magnetic resistance from the motor
- Any roughness, sticking at specific points, or grinding sensation → lubrication needed
- A machine producing Y-axis layer shifts with associated noise almost always passes this test with clear friction
What you need

Procedure
Section titled “Procedure”- Power off the printer
- Move the extruder carriage to one end of the rail by hand
- Apply 2–3 drops of oil directly onto the rail groove where the carriage sits — not on the exposed rail surface
- Slide the carriage slowly end-to-end 10–15 times to distribute oil through the ball bearings inside the carriage
- Apply oil at the opposite end and repeat
- Wipe excess oil from the exposed rail surfaces with a lint-free cloth — you do not want oil on the rail where pellets can pick it up
- Repeat for the other axis
- Re-run the hand-move test — movement should now feel smooth throughout
After lubricating
Section titled “After lubricating”- Run a short test print (5–10 layers) and listen for any remaining noise
- If grinding persists after fresh lubrication, the bearing carriage may need replacement — contact Ginger Additive support
- If a Y-axis layer shift was the symptom, also check belt tension (see Belt and chain mechanical issues) and run a calibration print
- Pellet printing generates more dust than filament printing — dust migrates into rail carriages over time
- Customers with very high production volumes (multiple shifts per day) should lubricate every 2–3 months
- The Z lead screws need a different lubricant (solid/grease, not oil) — see Belt and chain mechanical issues
